Product Description

ANTIQUE VICTORIAN AUSTRO HUNGARIAN VICTORIAN BROOCH

BRASS AND GLASS WITH DRAGON

AUTHENTIC PERIOD PIECE

"The Austro-Hungarian empire dates between the 1860s to 1918 and was one of the most powerful western empires in the world. Much of their designs were influenced by ancient Etruscan jewelry as well as later renaissance jewelry. "Today, Austria and Hungary are two separate countries, with their own different identities and jewelry history. Nevertheless the combination of the two nations in this 80 year period saw some of the most spectacular jewelry ever made"

A dragon is always a desirable feature in antique jewelry and this brooch incorporates a fabulous one in the design.  As is customary in Czechoslovakian and Austro Hungarian jewelry this brooch features brass metal with the dragon seeming to embrace the cobalt blue glass stone seen beneath it. This piece is less ornate but that certainly adds to its' beauty and elegance here. The openwork metal in the center is made in a honey comb design and the outer rim has a hammered design in it. The pinback has a C clasp which is not as slender as the earlier Victorian brooches, the wider C clasp dates it to the later Victorian era, circa 1880's-1890's.

This brooch is in very good vintage condition with the metal now showing a warm patina. The glass stone is lovely with no issues at all. The dragon has guarded it carefully over the years, lol

Measures approx. 2~1/4" across x approx. 1~6/8" long. Slight domed, curved, design gives it a striking raised look in the center which enhances the stone and dragon beautifully.
