"THE DARK SIDE" MYSTERIOUS SEASHELL NECKLACE
Vintage, 1960 - 70's Era
Ok, a bit dramatic but this necklace IS quite dark and features large, long, dark brown, seashells, of some sort. When viewing them with the light behind them you see they are semi transparent in areas making me think they are most likely dyed mother of pearl which makes them this dark brown color. They graduate in size, are cut into very thin slabs, and are highly polished.
In keeping with the dark shells, the neck chain material is a brown black color.
The center shell is HUGE measuring 2~1/8" long x 1~1/2" wide.
The other, white, mother of pearl, shells, and very small seashells, are hand strung in clustered groups across and on top of the dark shells. There are several varieties of the small seashells in this group, some are tiny, others are in various sizes and shapes, and some are sliced into very thin circle shapes. All are strung together onto the double silk cord which features a looped clasp closure. A cluster of round beads go through the loop to secure the necklace when wearing it.
Very good - excellent vintage condition.
The only thing to point out is a very tiny chip in one of the round mother of pearl beads at the center top of the necklace. This is very small, very insignificant, but noted for description accuracy. Only noticeable if looking very closely, much more so here since the close up photos are highly magnified.
Otherwise it is a beautifully made, elegantly boho, artistic, beachy, piece. I'm sure it will be one of the more unique items in your vintage seashell jewelry collection.
Measures 19" long with the center design area measuring 5~1/2"across x 3~1/4" long.
